Balloon in the Desert

Camel Riding

Everyone should try it at least once if only to experience the getting up and the sitting down as their front legs bend first, propelling you forward so you almost fall off the hump. Riding on the back of a camel through the desert is a UAE rite of passage and, if you've not been on one of the hairy humpbacks before, then why not take the opportunity to do so on a safari tour. Have a look at www.arabiannightstours.com, www.opdubai.com (Oasis Palm) and www.cyclonetours.com to see what's possible.

Deep Sea Fishing

All the equipment you'll need is provided with bait available on board, on a deap sea fishing trip from, amongst others, Oasis Palm Tourism. More info at www.opdubai.com or by ringing 04 268 6826. Desert Driving Training

'Beware - without proper training desert driving can be dangerous, even life-threatening! Desert driving is a tough challenge that asks a lot of both car and driver but, once you've mastered the skill, it opens up the vast UAE deserts and can be amazing fun and it only takes a day of training. The training alone is fun - you can look forward to exhilarating moments as you learn to safely manouvre your way up and down the picture-perfect dunes. Of course, no session is complete without getting stuck deep in sand, but this leads to another valuable lesson - always remember to pack a shovel and make sure you always travel in a convoy of at least two cars (and that's not your ordinary 2-wheel drive road car!). When you get stuck, and everyone does, you'll be glad of an extra pair of hands, or a tow. There are various desert driving schools. Here's one to try for starters - Emirates Driving Institute - visit www.edi-uae.com. Good luck!' - Taken from the April 2011 edition of Explorer's 'UAE live work explore' magazine. For more essential information, and detailed rundowns (including maps and GPS points) on the very best routes to take in the UAE and Oman, pick up copies of 'UAE Off-Road Explorer' and 'Oman Off-Road Explorer'. Alternatively have a look at www.deltaadventures.ae.

'Tell a snowboarder that sandboarding is like snowboarding and you'll get an evil glare. Any wakeboarder will do likewise; sandboarding is a sport of its own and requires balance, strength and plenty of tenacity. Once you climb your way to the top of the dune, it's best to wax the bottom of the board to reduce friction between the board and the sand. Strap your feet onto the board, bending your back knee slightly and slide on down, using your heels and toes to turm. Easy peasy...' (Explorer - UAE live work explore' April 2011).
