The population of Dubai has grown rapidly in recent times

In 1900 it’s estimated that the population of Dubai was around 10,000. By 1960 it had reached around 40,000 – that’s a four-fold increase in 60 years.

In 2010 the population of Dubai was around 2.26 million - an amazing 550-fold increase in the last 50 years.

Dubai is said to be the second most expensive city in the region, and 20th most expensive city in the world.

Of the 2.26 million people in Dubai, only 17% are native Emeratis, everyone else is a visitor or comer-in of some sort.

A split of the other nationalities in 2005 showed Other Arabs as 9.1% of the population, Indians 42-51%*, Pakistani 13-16%*, Bangladeshi 7.5-9%*, Filipino 2.5-3%*, Sri Lankan 1.5%, Somalis – 1.3%, European 0.9%, American 0.3%, and all others 5.7%. (* different sources give different percentages)

What are the best ways of Getting Around Dubai?

Although Arabic is the official language, English is the international language used in the city and is widely spoken by the majority of residents. All road signs and most other signs are in both Arabic and English. Other languages spoken in Dubai by its many foreign residents include Malayalam, Urdu, Persian, Gujarati, Pashto, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Tamil, Tagalog, Somali and Chinese.
